Mitchell sisters compete
in wrestling tourney
TOHATCHI, N.M. - Lindsay
and Amy Mitchell of Tohatchi
wrestled in their last meet of
the season March 12 at the U.S.
Girls' Wrestling Championships
in Pueblo, Colo.
Amy placed •second in the
third-grade division's 51-pound
category.
Lindsay Mitchell placed third
in the second-grade division's
71-pound category.
Ganado's Begay, Curley
compete in ISK
FOUNTAIN HILLS, Adz. - The
inaugural Southwest Spine and
Sports Mountain to Fountain 15K
on March. 12 featured standout
performances by two former area
runners.
Ganado High School graduate
and-Arizona State University's
Alvina Begay finished fourth

of 55:22. The 30-year-old is an
Olympic Trials qualifier in the
marathon and finished 5th in the
2010 PF Chang Marathon with a
time of 2:37:14.
Craig Curley, a 2005 Class 2A
cross-country state champion *
from St. Michael, finished 4th
in the men's race with a time of
46:07.
Curley, 21, has emerged as a
strong competitor .on the national
scene. Last month, Curley
represented the U.S. national team
at the North American Central
America and Caribbean Athletic
Association's cross-country meet
in Trinidad.
The Fountain Hill's 15K was
organized by The Bandidos, a
Phoenix area running club.
Young Navajo wrestler
competes in Wis. meet
MADISON, Wis. - Averie Tom,
8, of Black River Falls, Wis., will
compete in the 2011 WWF Kids
Folkstyle State Tournament in
Madison March 25 and 26.
Wrestlers must qualify at the
regional tournament, which was
held March 12. The top two
finishers from each weight group
qualify.
Tom, Ho-Chunk/Navajo, is the
grandson of Gilbert and Bessie
Tom of Farmington. His father,
Daryl Tom, is from Albuquerque.
Ganado's Curtis
earn honors
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest
Missouri State University's Gabby
Curtis, of Ganado, Ariz., has
been named the Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics
Association women's basketball
player of the year. She was also
named to the first team for the
association, which competes in
the National Collegiate Athletic
Association Division II.
Curtis, a senior, helped her team
claim its first-ever regional title
over the weekend, defeating the
University of Central Oklahoma.
She led the MIAA in scoring
at 18 points per game and was
a unanimous first-team choice
by the league's 12 head coaches.
She was named the regional's
most outstanding player and
scored 21 points in the regional
championship game.
Curtis, majoring in physical
education, graduated from Ganado
High in 2008. She helped secure
Ganado's first-ever 3A state
basketball title in 2007.
She is a former Navajo Times
Player of the Year, a 3A All-State
first team selection and a 1A-3A
small schools player of the year.

Athletic Club March 14.
Tahnee Robinson, the senior
captain for the University of
Nevada women's basketball
team, made the cut as one of five
finalists.
The prestigious award is given
annually by the Amateur Athletic
Union to the nation's top amateur
athlete and features such past
winners as quarterback Tim
Tebow, basketball player J.J.
Redick and swimmer Michael
Phelps.
Robinson was first selected as
one of the 12 semifinalists and
made the top,five after a vote by
national athletic organizations in
combination with an online poll
conducted by USA Today.
Robinson finished 2010 as the
eighth-best scorer in the country
with 22.7 points per game and
15th in the nation with 3.1 three-
pointers per game. She was
twice named Western Athletic
Conference Player of the Week
and named MVP of the Caribbean
Classic after averaging 24.5 points
in two games, shooting 47.2
percent, 17-36 from the field and
a total of seven three-pointers.
In addition to her 9n-court
performance, Robinson ha.s
diligently worked through personal
hardship throughout her career.
She has had to carry a significant
academic load since transferring
from Sheridan College last season
and has handled it, putting herself
on course to graduate this summer.
Firefighting units
invitational
AZTEC, N.M. - The Aztec High
School track & field team is hosting
the B&B Portable Firefighting
Units Aztec Invitational Friday
and Saturday.
All county schools will be in
attendance in addition to schools
from throughout the region.
Attending high schools include
Aztec, Bayfield, Bloomfield,
Durang0, Farmington, Ignacio,
Kirtland Central, Mancos, Navajo
Prep, Pagosa Springs, Piedra
Vista, St. Plus€and Thoreau.
Competition within the county
is fierce this year between athletes
like Nick Waterhouse of Piedra
Vista and Justin Watkins of Aztec.
The 100-meter and 200-meter are
sure to ba exciting.
Other athletes to watch include
Meghan Gerry of Aztec and
Kourtni'Ashcroft of Kirtland
Central, also in the 100-meter and
200-meter races,
Keep your eyes on Drew
Placencio of Kirtlahd Central and
Dillon Jacquez of Farmington in
the throwing events.
Instead of ribbons and medals,
sponsors have donated jackets
for first place, bags for second
place and T-shirts for third place.
Fourth, fifth and sixth places will
receive medals.
