Winslow's Stacey sets sights on softball title

awards even as one of the youngest
on the team - she earned the
2008 rookie of the year award her
freshman year, helped the 2009
team to a 3A state runner-up rifle,
earned the 2009 National Fastpitch
Coaches Association All-American
Scholar-Athlete Team award, and
then helped the 2008, 2009, and
2010 teams to 3A North softball
crowns.

'It's so amazing
to me how
much power her
body generates
- she's such a
small person
She plays
bigger on the
fieM and on the,
courts than she
actually is...'
As a juflior, Stacey was ranked
fourth in Arizona regardless of
class for her 36 "stolen bases. She
was also her team's most valuable
player in 2010.
Though Stacey did not claim a
cross-country state title she did
earn all-state honors.
She also helped the 2008
basketball team to a 3A state
title, the 2009 team to a 3A North
regional title and to a 2009 state
runner-up title, and then the 2010
team to another state title. She was
the starting point guard all four
years.
With all her awards, one might
think she was coming from'a
softball - even basketball, family.
"My dad was into basketball, my
morn was more into her academics,
my oldest brother is an artist, my
second oldest brother was into
chess, and my sister is a basketball
player," said Stacey. "I guess my
parents just wanted me to try
something new."
Right after losing in the second
round of the 3A North basketball
tournament to the eventual state
champions from Window Rock,
Winslow's basketball season ended
' and Stacey went straight to softball
tryouts.
"I had practice the very next
day," she said. "Practice was
intense, conditioning was a lot
different, and I thought I would be
in shape but I had to get my arm in
shape."
Stacey leads this year's softball
team, which is dominated by young
players.
"I think my role is more of
a leadership one," Stacey said.
"Being there for the younger girls
and just trying to help everyone stay
on top of softball and homework.
It does get difficult keeping on top
of athletics and academics."
For Winslow's head coach Becky
Barris, Stacey's game is much
bigger than her 5-foot stature.
"It's so amazing to me how much
power her body generates - she's
such a small person," said Barris,
who is going on her llth year as
head coach for the Bulldogs. "She
plays bigger on the field and on the
courts than she actually is - it's like
having a coach on the field."
According to Barris, though
Stacey is a right-handed batter she
became a slapper because "she is
one of the fastest girls we've ever
had."
Stacey was named the 2010 3A
North defensive player of the year
by the Arizona Interscholastic
Association and named the 2009
defensive player of the year for her
team her sophomore year.
"She's always been an integral
part of our success," Bards said.
Last year, Stacey scored the
winning .run for the Lady Bulldogs
that sealed the state rifle win over
Estrella Foothills. It" was at the
bottom of the seventh inning and
the score was tied at 3.
Stacey came up to bat and drew a
walk. After getting to third, Stacey
stole home for the final score of 4-3
to end the game and take the win.
"Once she sets her mind, it's
hard to deny what She sets out for,"
Bards said. "She's just one of those
kids you wish you could duplicate.
She's quick and has great range
when she throws the ball.
"As a catcher for the last three
years, she is so knowledgeable
about any batter who steps up,"
said Barris. "She knows what to
call."
Since Stacey will be playing
shortstop in college, Barris said
Stacey will play most of this season
at that position. "
According to an article published
by CSI's athletic department,
Stacey is an "...extremely versatile
player. She can play infield, outfield
or catcher and is a speed kid that
swings left-handed."
"We are extremely excited that
Gabby...signed with us," said CSI
head coach Nick Baumert in the
article. "Gabby has an unbelievable
arm, speed and has won on every
team she's been a part of."
Stacey's parents are Frank and
Debra Stacey of Winslow. She
maintains a grade point average
of 3.7.
WINDOW ROCK - Gabrielle
Stacey and the rest of the Winslow
Lady Bulldogs lived by the
statement "one team, one dream."
The team was the Lady Bulldogs
softball team and the dream was to
win the 3A state softball crown.
Using that in everything they
did from stealing bases to diving
for the ball to hitting a home run
and even to striking out that earned
them the 2010 state championship.
Stacey, a senior shortstop and
catcher, not only leadS'the team in
her final year but she's one of the
top softball players in the state.
"We have a really good chance
to take it again this year," Stacey
said of another state title. "It'll be
a tough run because everyone will
want to beat us but for some of us,
it's our last year, so we Want to go
out big."
The all-around athlete has
earned many accolades in softball,
basketball and cross country..
Stacey has signed a letter of
intent to play shortstop at the
College of Southern Idaho in Twin
Falls, Idaho.
Stacey, who will be part of the
"strongest recruiting classes in its
five-year history," according to the
school's Web site, will receive a
full-ride scholarship for four years.
"I really wanted to play college
softball - that was my main goal,"
she said. "It took a lot of time and
development and ever since I was
little, people always told me they
saw a passion in me for the sport.
"My parents and coaches saw
how much love I had for the game
and they really pushed me and told
me not give up even if we were
losing," she added.
In softball, Stacey received

leadership, Newcomb has high
hopes for freshman and starting
shortstop Liam Marez.
"He is a strong freshman,"
Newcomb said. "I can see him
eventually becoming one of the top
baseball players on the reservation.
He'll be a good star down the road
if he stays on task and does what
he's supposed to do on the field and
in the classroom."
The Hornets are currently 1-1,
with a win against Many Farms,
17-6, and a loss to Tuba City, 26-5.
"I was really pleased with
our pitching by Elliot Burns,"
Newcomb said of the Many Farms
game. "He only walked one kid
in five innings and I felt we were
aggressive on the base path."
The Tuba City game last Friday,'
however, was a complete opposite.
"They did all facets of the game
better than us - pitching, hitting,"
he said of the Warriors. "They set
a standard of where we need to be
and where we need to improve.
That was an eye-opener for us."
The Hornets will travel to Pifion
today. Game is scheduled for 2:30
p.m.
"We have a good camaraderie of
kids," Newcomb added. "We play
well together as a team and there
are no superstars. Our inexperience
might hurt us a little bit, but we're
one year away from being a good
team."
them being there and giving a great
effort on a daily basis. They're the
foundation of the team because
they've had previous experience
and we're leaning on them for
direction.
"I hope they continue to provide
that leadership and model the'way
everyone else should be playing,"
he added.
