ALBUQUERQUE - Despite
losi.ng in the Class 4A state
semifinals, the Piedra Vista boys'
basketball team accomplished
more this season than they ever
fathomed.
. The Panthers came into the
tournament as the No. 4 "seed, but
head coach Brian Shock felt his
team was the dark horse of the
tournament.
"PV has never been to The Pit,
and we are not supposed to win,"
Shock said. "There is nothing for
us to lose, and everything to gain.
The storied programs like Gallup,
Espanola and Capital, those are the
storied programs, and all we are
trying to do is write another chapter
and start ours."
On March 9, the Panthers got
their first win at The Pit with a
63-52 triumph over Roswell, the
two-time defending state champs.
In that game, Shock felt that the
critics didn't give his team a
fighting chance.
But playing the role of an
underdog the Panthers broke a 42-
42 third quarter tie and outscored
Roswell 23-9 in the final quarter
to set up a date with No. 8 seed
Goddard, a team that upset top-
seeded Gallup in the quarterfinals.
The Rockets came in as a lower
seed since they lost the District
4-4A title to the Coyotes, but Shock
knew this club was one of the top
teams in the state.
And although the Panthers kept
it close for three quarters, the
Rockets were just too much as PV
bowed out of the tournament in a
73-46 defeat.
"When we first played Goddard
we pressed them for four quarters
and they beat us by 31/' Shock
said. "They're a good team and
when the bracket came out, honest
to God I said Goddard was the No.
1 because of their personnel."
Not only did the Rockets have
size, they also had a Chase Salazar,
Goddard's point guard, who created
match-up problems for PV.
They re just big andk Was hard
to get around them," said PV senior
Dominic Valdez, who finished with
10 points before fouling out with
3:36 left in the game.
For the first three quarters, it was
Valdez and sophomore guard Jacob
Arrnijo who carried the team as the
In their quarterfinal matchup,
Salazar stepped up to the p!ate and
spoiled Gallup's bid by scoring
22 points and handing out seven
assists in his team's 72-54 win.
Despite those gaudy numbers,
Gallup kept the.contest close in
the early going a s they trailed 16-
12 at the end of the first quarter
¢vith senior guard Dennis Cadman
scoring six of his 10 points.
But in the next quarter, the
Rockets went inside numerous
times and seized a 27-18 lead
midway through the second before
Gallup got within four points,
27-23, on a free throw by Adam
Sowers, who led the team with 12
points.
Goddard, however, closed the
half with a 10-3 run for a 37-29
edge at the break.
Things went from bad to worse
for the Bengals as the Rockets
outscored them 23 to 13 after the
break that ultimately put the game
out reach with Goddard leading
60-42.
In the final quarter, both teams
tacked on 12 points apiece as
GaUup ended its season at 22,8. ,
"I don't think they're 20 points
better than us, but that's a big
strong team," said Gallup coach
Domonic Romero. "Give credit to
them and I think they're a complete
package at guard. They have
shooting guards and post players

Besides Sowers and Cadman,
the Bengals also had Nick August
in double figures with 11 points.
"I don't think we were ready

August said. "Goddard outmuscled

In a game that had two opposing
halves, the Rehoboth Lynx came
out on the wrong end in their
quarterfinal matchup against Mesa
Vista at the Santa Ana Star Center
On March'9.
The Lynx struggled and made
2 of 21 shots from the field in the
first half and trailed 37-12 at the
break before storming back in the
second only to come up short in a
79-68 loss.
"We did not come out ready to
go in the first half," said Rehoboth
coach Kevin Zwiers. "We played
very tight and we took the shots we
needed, but we just could not get
to them fall. We dug ourselves in a
hole and we have ,no one to blame
but ourselves."
After the break, the Lynx hit
9 field goals including 4 from
downtown. Senior post Ryan
Postma scored the initial 7 points
to fuel that run and finished with a
team-high 18 points.
Later the quarter the Lynx hit
three consecutive treys with the
final one by Will Golden cutting
Mesa Vista's lead down to 46-28
with 2:42 to go.
In the final two minutes, senior
post Connor Joy added a couple
of inside buckets as the Lynx cut
that 25-point deficit down to 50-34
heading into the fourth.
In a helter-skelter pace, both
teams came up with some big shots
in the final eight minutes and at one
point Rehoboth trimmed the lead
down to 66-60 on a put-back by
Joy with 1:51 left in regulation.
But that was a close as the Lynx
would get as Mesa Vista made 13
of 16 free throws down the stretch
to seal the win.
"At halftime we talked about
playing our style of basketball,"
Zwiers said. "I think we did that
where we forced some turnovers,
we relaxed a little bit and we got
some of our shots to fall."
